This round the world trip has been in our heads for a few years now.
At the start of the dream, we thought we would take a 4×4 truck, same as those from Paris Dakar but, after information, it is completely off budget and I do not have the technical skills to renovate a second hand vehicle. Exit the truck
Then we looked at the campers, but at 5, it takes a big one and the budget, although cheaper than the truck, is still too high.
After reading many blogs about cycling or trike trips, we planned to visit the world by pedaling; we even attended a meeting of cyclo-travelers in the Jura (France) in 2012 (https://eurovelogex.wordpress.com/)
The principle pleases us but in the meantime, we have moved, I have changed work and my knee is in bad condition … meanwhile, time is flying and the girls are growing up.
Last year, in 2016, we went to northern Brazil, in backpacker mode, close to nature and locals. It was decided, in 2017, we would carry out our project, walking with our backpacks and taking public transport. The bike is good, but at 5, it becomes difficult, especially to travel on several continents, when taking buses, trains and other aircraft …
Back home, we discussed with the family about the project, its duration, its objectives, its logistics; Everyone has expressed their desires and little by little our adventure has taken shape. In September, we were decided and I notified my employer. In November, we started this website and at the end of December the “round the world” tickets were bought.
Well, it will not really be a tour of the world, we probably will not do all the continents but some countries of America, Oceania and Asia and maybe one or two in Africa (if our budget at the end allows us ).
We will travel during 400 days and 400 nights and the first idea is to take 40 days per country: the aim is not to visit a maximum of tourist sites but to take the time to live and share with the locals. If possible, we will work (in fact volunteering) a little on each continent and try to stay as much as possible with local people, at their place… but at 5, it will probably not be easy, that is why we will also carry a tent. Finally we hope to be able to hike 7/10 days per country in order to discover the nature as close as possible. We will avoid, as much as we can, to pass – or at least to stay too long – in big cities.
Apart from our intercontinental flights (Paris / Miami, Santiago / Auckland, Sydney / Singapore and Singapore / Dubai / Paris) we have no plan or itinerary: we will be guided by our lucky star. We already know that we will not hold 40 days per country, either because the permitted duration will be only 30 days for some countries, or because we will want to stay longer or on the contrary to leave sooner …
At the end, if the journey were to end sooner or later, it is important that we leave and enjoy this adventure which is coming.
Departure on July 11, 2017 – return expected on August 15, 2018
